Bullying

 

Bullying is the repeated and intentional use of aggressive behaviour to harm, intimidate, or dominate someone who is perceived as vulnerable. It can take different forms, including:

  • Physical bullying (hitting, pushing, damaging belongings)
  • Verbal bullying (name-calling, insults, threats)
  • Social bullying (spreading rumors, exclusion, public humiliation)
  • Cyberbullying (harassment through social media, texts, or online platforms)

Effects of Bullying on Teenagers at School

Bullying can have serious and long-lasting effects on teenagers, including:

Emotional & Psychological Effects

  • Low self-esteem and self-worth
  • Increased anxiety, depression, or loneliness
  • Feeling unsafe or unwanted at school
  • Increased risk of suicidal thoughts

Academic Effects

  • Difficulty concentrating and staying motivated
  • Decreased participation in school activities
  • Lower grades and school performance
  • Increased risk of skipping school or dropping out

Social Effects

  • Difficulty making and maintaining friendships
  • Social isolation and withdrawal
  • Trust issues in relationships

Physical Effects

  • Headaches, stomach aches, and other stress-related illnesses
  • Changes in sleep patterns (insomnia or excessive sleeping)
  • Eating disorders or loss of appetite

If bullying is not addressed, it can have lifelong consequences for both the victim and the bully. Schools, parents, and communities play a key role in preventing and stopping bullying by promoting kindness, inclusivity, and awareness.
