Is it for me?

Studying N5 English:

  • You will enjoy different ways of working including whole class, small group and individual tasks.
  • You will take on more independent work, including producing a writing portfolio which counts for 30% of the course.
  • You will have a strong focus on Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation.
  • You will learn about some of the best writing produced by Scottish authors.
  • You will study other genres of literature.
  • You will be assessed on Solo Talks during the school year.
  • You will sit formal examinations at the end of the year.

What will I learn?

You will develop skills and knowledge in:

  • Understanding, analysing and evaluating detailed texts of all kinds.
  • Creating, structuring and producing detailed spoken and written language.
  • Developing further knowledge about language planning, researching and decision-making.
  • Effective communication, including questioning, giving opinions, and reflecting on your own and on others’ ideas.
  • Using creative and critical thinking to synthesise ideas and arguments.

What can I do with it?

Careers and education routes:

  • National 5 is a good preparation for undertaking the Higher English course.
  • Units at National 5 can add to an earlier National 4 qualification.
  • National 5 is recognised by colleges and employers.
  • The course gives you access to a range of texts of the sort which we hope you will continue to enjoy into later life.
