Skills Framework

As part of the school's PSE programme pupils are encouraged to think about and map their employability skills. To do this we focus on 6 key areas, under the banner of Skills for Learning, Life and Work. 

The image below shows the skills frame work. 

This framework is then divided into the core skills that pupils develop in school and beyond as part of that key area, as shown in the sections below. (click on the plus to show the core skills)

Literacy

Skills  What that means  Success criteria linked to skill
Reading  The ability to understand a text. I can understand information contained within a text.
Writing The ability to create texts or record information.  I can use language to share thoughts with a specific audience through writing.
Listening The ability to hear other people’s ideas and understand
information when someone else is speaking.

I can understand and respond to information that is shared

with me orally.

Communication The ability to share opinions and ideas through solo presentations,
group discussions, meetings or video/audio.
I can use language to share thoughts with a specific audience.
Researching The ability to find information and evaluate that the sources I have used are accurate and appropriate. I can find information that is trustworthy to support my ideas and work.
ICT Presentation The ability to use a variety of software to share information clearly.  I can use software and apps to share information with others coherently.
Reasoning The ability to convince someone of your opinion by providing sound reasoning. I am able to put across evidence based viewpoints, perspectives or information to bring others round to my way of thinking.
Interviewing The ability to ask, or respond to questions that will provide relevant information. I can ask and answer questions in a structured manner.

Numeracy

Functional The ability to work with numbers including whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions. I can interpret a problem and use
an appropriate strategy to carry
out calculations. 
Financial The ability to manage money – effectively plan, budget and cost. The ability to manage money – effectively plan, budget and cost.
Measuring &
Accuracy
The ability to measure using a wide range of units and instruments accurately. This includes length, weight/mass, volume, area and capacity. I can use instruments to accurately take measurements and use these to carry out
appropriate calculations using the most suitable format.
Time Management The ability to manage time effectively for yourself. This includes meeting deadlines and planning projects. I can use 12 and 24 hour clock when reading and understanding timetables.
Statistical The ability to collect, organise, display, interpret and analyse data in an appropriate way, drawing conclusions to make decisions or comparisons. I can gather and display data in the most effective graph or chart in addition to carrying out statistical calculations to make conclusions.

Innovation The ability to make something new or to invent something. I can form ideas in response to a situation, stimulus or problem.
Evaluating The ability to judge or form a critical opinion of something. I am able to make judgements based on facts and use them to inform my future learning.
Lateral Thinking The ability to solve problems through an indirect and creative approach using reasoning that is not immediately obvious. I am able to solve problems that may not have an obvious solution.

Others
The ability to interact, cooperate, collaborate and manage conflicts with other people in order to complete tasks and achieve shared
goals. This could be working with people of different generations or backgrounds.

Delegating The ability to accept responsibility for dealing with a situation.  I am confident in leading a group and can communicate my aims effectively.

Strategic Management The process of formulating and implementing major goals and initiatives. I can plan a task effectively, taking into consideration areas of potential difficulty.
Encouraging Others The ability to give someone support and confidence.  I can support members of my

Negotiating The ability to listen to opinions, give my own opinions and, through discussion, come to a mutually positive conclusion. I can solve problems by talking to others in my group or those in other groups.
Planning & Organising The ability to think ahead in order to identify and implement
strategies to help achieve your goal.

Enterprise & Employability

Problem Solving  The ability to understand a problem by breaking it down into smaller parts and identifying the key issues, implications and solutions.  can break a task into manageable parts to understand what is being asked of me, and I am then able to find a solution.
Taking Initiative  Taking a proactive approach, and being persistent in overcoming difficulties that arise. I approach tasks with a positive, proactive attitude and always try my best to complete them.
Decision Making The process that results in the selection of a course of action among several different possibilities. Based on the information I gather, I can select a course of action that will allow me to solve a problem.
Target Setting Being aware of what you want to achieve and how to go about achieving your goal. I can use strategies to help me learn effectively and reach my full potential.
Adaptable The ability to change to ensure a positive outcome can be reached. When something does not work the first time, I can look at the problem again and find an alternative way to solve it.
Reliable Being able to be trusted to complete a task or job to a consistently high standard. I can be trusted to complete jobs, tasks or sets of instructions given to me.
Using IT and

The ability to use a variety of software on
computer/mobile/tablet to enhance my learning and the work I produce.

Digital Organisation The ability to manage and organise the files I
store on my PC/mobile/tablet so they are easy to access.

Validating Digital
Sources
The ability to check that the information I find online is reliable and factual. I can use a variety of sources to find information online, acknowledge the sources and make sound judgements about their reliability.

Responsibility
The ability to keep myself, others and information safe online. I understand how to behave safely when using devices and I am aware of the positive and negative impacts of online communication.

Health & Wellbeing

Positive Attitude

A feeling of being self-motivated and displaying positive behaviour.

 I believe in the abilities I have to complete tasks and I can access
support if needed.

Perseverance  Persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success due to changing or challenging circumstances. When I find something
challenging, I do not give up and try alternative strategies and solutions until I complete the task.
Resilience The ability to recover quickly from difficulty and adversity.

 I can identify when I am experiencing challenging situations and can use strategies to help deal with it.

Self-awareness  Having an understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, beliefs and emotions, as well as how to communicate this with your body language. I have confidence in my abilities and opinions but I am aware of how my actions are perceived by others.
Express Feelings The ability to articulate how you are feeling in a measured way. I can talk about how I feel while still appreciating the feelings of others.
Respect The ability to show an appreciation for others and my surroundings. I am polite to others, tolerant of people’s differences and take care of the environment that I live and work in.
Build
Relationships
The ability to relate to others, create positive friendships, or be able to work together. I treat others in the way I wish to be treated myself and can stand up for others who may not be able to stand up for themselves.

The ability to appreciate and participate in exercise and physical activity.
